Common MacBook Charging Issues and How to Fix Them

MacBook Not Charging? Here’s What You Need to Know

If your MacBook isn’t charging, don’t panic — you’re not alone. At MT Systems, located in Thornhill, Ontario, we help customers across Toronto and the GTA fix common MacBook charging problems quickly and affordably. Whether you’re using a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, charging issues can be caused by several hardware or software problems.

Here are the most common MacBook charging issues and how to fix them.

1. Dirty or Damaged Charging Port

Dust, lint, or debris can block the USB-C or MagSafe charging port, preventing a good connection.

Fix:

  • Inspect the charging port using a flashlight.
  • Use a soft brush or compressed air to gently clean it.
  • If the port is damaged, we offer MacBook charging port repair services in-store.

2. Faulty USB-C or MagSafe Charging Cable

Your MacBook charger might be the problem. Cables can fray, burn, or get damaged over time.

Fix:

  • Test with another working charger.
  • Look for wear and tear on the cable or adapter.
  • We sell and test genuine and compatible MacBook chargers at MT Systems.

3. Battery Health or Logic Board Issues

If your MacBook only works when plugged in, your battery may be dead or your logic board might be failing.

Fix:

  • Check battery health under System Settings > Battery > Battery Health.
  • If it says “Service Recommended,” you likely need a new battery.
  • Logic board issues need a professional diagnosis. We offer logic board repair and battery replacement for all MacBook models.

4. Overheating or Power Management Glitches

If your MacBook gets too hot, charging can pause for safety. Sometimes, background processes or software bugs cause charging problems.

Fix:

  • Shut down the MacBook and let it cool.
  • Reset the SMC (System Management Controller).
    • For MacBooks with Apple T2 chip:
Shut down → Press and hold Control + Option + Shift (right side) for 7 seconds → Hold the Power button as well for another 7 seconds → Release and turn on the MacBook.
    • For older models: SMC reset instructions vary, and we can help you if you’re not sure.

5. Charging Light Indicator Not Working

If you’re using a MagSafe charger and the orange/green LED isn’t lighting up, it may not be charging properly.

Fix:

  • Try another charger to isolate the issue.
  • Bring it in for testing at MT Systems, 7378 Yonge Street, Unit 3B, Thornhill — we’ll inspect your MacBook for free.
