If you’re looking for a cheap laptop for checking e-mail, surfing the Web, and running your basic home productivity apps, consider the Acer Aspire 5517-1643 ($449.98 list). This no-frills notebook is well built and features a nice 15.6-inch display that can handle 720p video, but its performance is subpar, even for a budget system, and you don’t get much in the way of features.

Features
Features are scarce on this model, even by budget notebook standards. The 5517 lacks a Webcam and an Expresscard slot (both of which I’ve seen in other similarly-priced laptops, and there are only two USB ports. Not surprisingly, wireless networking comes by way of an 802.11g adapter rather than the faster Draft N variety. There’s a VGA output, an Ethernet port, and two audio jacks on the left side of the chassis, and a DVD burner on the right. A multi-format card reader is located on the front edge of the notebook. The 250GB hard drive is loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) and a good deal of bloatware, including trial versions of Microsoft Office 2007 and Norton Internet Security and eBay and Netflix adware.
