Design
With its black, faux snake skin lid and silver Acer badge, the 5517 is actually quite stylish for a budget notebook. Despite its plastic lid and frame, the chassis has a nice solid feel, thanks in part to a set of heavy duty lid hinges. Weighing in at 5.5 pounds (6.3 with adapter), the 5517 is no lightweight but is still portable enough for frequent travel.
On the inside, the gunmetal gray wrist rest and black keyboard offer a smudge-free and comfortable typing experience, complete with a dedicated number pad and a responsive, lightly textured touchpad. The two mouse buttons are nice and wide but a tad noisy. The glossy 15.6-inch screen has a resolution of 1366-by-768 pixels and a 16:9 aspect ratio, enabling it to display HD (720p) content without scaling or stretching the picture. The panel is bright and produces bold, accurate colors, and it offers wide viewing angles from either side.
Features
Features are scarce on this model, even by budget notebook standards. The 5517 lacks a Webcam and an Expresscard slot (both of which I’ve seen in other similarly-priced laptops, and there are only two USB ports. Not surprisingly, wireless networking comes by way of an 802.11g adapter rather than the faster Draft N variety. There’s a VGA output, an Ethernet port, and two audio jacks on the left side of the chassis, and a DVD burner on the right. A multi-format card reader is located on the front edge of the notebook. The 250GB hard drive is loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) and a good deal of bloatware, including trial versions of Microsoft Office 2007 and Norton Internet Security and eBay and Netflix adware.
